What a great idea. We advise small businesses and we know that there is often a gulf between what the parties would ideally both like to do and what happens in practice. Immediate financial pressures make it so much harder for each party to stand back and look at the big picture and the value of experience and skills in the workplace.

The number of times I’ve seen mothers trying to return to work after maternity leave who are so worried about their finances and their arrangements for their family that they cannot see the employer’s perspective; meanwhile the employer is often under pressure too with uncertainty, what their legal obligations are and how to keep the business going. So neither party is working together to nurture, maximise and retain the benefit of keeping experience and skills in the workplace.

Access to enhanced support and benefits would help in so many cases.
