It may seem intuitive to hire somebody based on the notion of cultural fit, but it is crucial to interrogate what this might really mean. Is it just going to be more of the same? Who is likely to be disqualified in the process?
Cultural fit is defined as "the likelihood that a job candidate will be able to conform and adapt to the core values and collective behaviors that make up an organization" But what exactly are these core values and collective behaviors? In a white male dominated industry how can women or minorities really be a culture fit? We have different backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives that oppose the majority. Being the only Black, Latina, or woman in the room at any given time I often ask myself is the "real" me even allowed or accepted in this space?
