The British government announced a plan on May 27to to give working parents of children aged 3-4 the right to claim 30 hours of free nursery child care per week (doubling the current 15-hour allowance). These plans will help to reduce soaring prices but they won't help with another problem: shortage of spaces. Many nurseries have 2 year waiting lists, making it almost necessary to sign up before a woman actually becomes pregnant. Early child care is essential to increase social mobility and correct for rising inequalities. Let's hope this policy helps. At age five, the vocabulary of a British child from the poorest quintile is 19 months behind that of the richest. Let's fix this! 5 is too early to already have entrencehd inequalities.
