Facebook and Apple are now offering to pay for female employees to freeze their eggs (a process which can cost upwards of $20,000). They say its an attempt to narrow the divide between opportunities for male and female employees. Some are championing the move, others are saying it is ignoring the deeper problems: Childless or not, women still earn less than me. And IVF only works a third of the time. If Apple and Facebook want to pay for procedures like this, I would say go for it - but I don't think it's going to be the magic bullet that solves the gender divide in the tech world.
The idea behind offering this option to female employees seems innocuous. It gives women an option to delay childbirth to focus on their careers. But while some are embracing the idea as a step toward closing the gender gap, not everyone is warm to it. Critics say this is just one more way to put the workplace before having a family.
